When you hear “DIY wedding,” your first thought is either A) “UGH, never! That’s why wedding planners exist,” or B) “Let’s get started! I’m all about crafting.” Whichever camp you fall into, a DIY photo booth project is one that every type of bride can handle. With all of the apps and selfie sticks available, there is really no need to rent a photo booth. Plus, making your own photo booth saves you money, earns you bragging rights and adds a personal touch to your wedding. With the help of my bridesmaids and close friends, I managed to create my dream photo booth.
For those still doubting me, I’m going to walk you through the process, step-by-step.
Step 1: Pick a backdrop. For some brides, this might be the hardest decision. There are so many options out there! Wrapping paper, streamers, a pretty printed sheet, ribbon or tissue paper all make beautiful backdrops.
Step 2: Decide how to capture photos. As I mentioned earlier, apps work really well for DIY photo booths. Try CustomBooth, Wedding Party or Pocketbooth. If all else fails, just let guests use their own phones or cameras.
Step 3: Assemble photo booth. Once you have all the materials you need, this is the easy part – honestly! Depending on your reception setting, there are few different ways to set up the backdrop: Tape the backdrop directly onto the wall; string twine in between two removable hooks on a wall; tie string around a tree and attach the backdrop with clothespins; or hang a dowel rod or shower curtain rod on a sturdy surface with a small nail and string. Luckily, a family friend let me borrow a photo booth stand to which I taped pink, white and gold crepe paper streamers for my backdrop. A dear friend made gold glittery letters that spelled out “Best Day Ever” to string across the top of the booth.
Step 4: Add finishing touches. Now is the time to personalize. Bring in old Halloween costume accessories and empty picture frames for props. Make a sign with instructions so guests know how to use the photo booth.
That wasn’t so hard, now, was it?
